DEXA Whole Body Composition

See Beyond the Scale

The Scale Measures Weight. DEXA Whole Body Composition Measures Health.

If you’re on a weight management journey, including a GLP-1 medication, you’ve likely seen the number on the scale move in the right direction. That’s exciting progress – and often a sign of hard work and commitment to your health.

But there’s one thing the scale can’t tell you:

What Are You Actually Losing?

Weight loss can include fat, but it can also include lean muscle mass. Understanding the difference matters because muscle plays a critical role in strength, mobility, and long-term health.

And not all fat is the same. Visceral fat – the “hidden” fat that surrounds your internal organs is associated with increased health risks and may offer a more comprehensive view of overall wellness than weight alone.

The scale also can’t provide insight into your bone health. Maintaining healthy bone density is an important part of overall wellness, particularly as we age and our bodies change.

The number on the scale only tells part of the story. To fully understand your progress, it’s important to know how your body composition is changing: how much fat you’re losing, whether you’re preserving muscle, how much visceral fat you’re carrying, and the status of your bone health.

That’s where DEXA Whole Body Composition comes in.

See What the Scale Can't

Traditional scales provide a single number. DEXA Whole Body Composition can provide additional insights into what’s happening inside your body. In a quick, non-invasive scan, SJRA’s DEXA Whole Body Composition measures:

Whole Body DEXA Frequently Asked Questions

What is DEXA Whole Body Composition?

DEXA Whole Body Composition is an advanced imaging approach that measures body
fat percentage, lean muscle mass, visceral fat, and bone health. Unlike a traditional
scale, DEXA provides a detail analysis of what makes up your weight, giving you a more
complete picture of your overall metabolic health.

Who should consider a DEXA Whole Body Composition Study?

DEXA Whole Body Composition may be beneficial for individuals focused on weight
management, fitness, healthy aging, or anyone who wants a more detail understanding
of their body composition. It can also help patients using GLP-1 medication to establish a
baseline and monitor changes over time.

What information does it provide?

A detailed report will be provided to you and your doctor focusing on your overall
metabolic health, including measurements of body fat percentage, lean muscle mass,
visceral fat, bone health, and other weight distribution metrics.

These insight can help you better understand your progress and support conversations
with your doctor.

How do I schedule an appointment?

At this time, DEXA Whole Body Compositions can be scheduled across all three locations by calling (888) 909-7572. Our team is readily available between Monday – Friday from 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM and Saturday from 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM to assist you.

Do I need to prepare beforehand?

No special preparation is required. There is no fasting, medication adjustment, or
recovery time needed.

What happens during my appointment?

You’ll lie comfortably on a padded table while the DEXA scanner passes over your body. The exam is non-invasive, painless, and typically takes about 20 minutes to complete.

Is it safe?

Yes, DEXA Whole Body Composition uses low-dose X-ray technology making it ideal for
monitoring changes over time.

Will I receive my results?

Yes. A detailed report will be sent to your doctor, and will be available to you via our
secure patient portal.

Should I get more than one scan?

Routine scans allow you to compare results over time, helping establish a baseline and
monitor changes in body fat, lean muscle mass, visceral fat, and bone health to provide a
clearer picture of your progress. Speak with your doctor to determine what interval is
right for you.

How much does it cost?

At this time, DEXA Whole Body Composition is not covered by health insurance
providers. It is available for a $99 out of pocket cost and is HSA/FSA eligible.

Do I need a referral?

Yes. An imaging referral from your doctor is required for your DEXA Whole Body
Composition appointment.

I am taking a GLP-1 medication. How can this help?

GLP-1 medications can lead to weight loss, but the scale cannot distinguish between
changes in body fat, bone health, or lean muscle mass. DEXA Whole Body Composition provides a
more detailed view of how your weight loss is occurring, helping you better understand
your progress.
