Amyloid PET/CT

Amyloid PET/CT for Cognitive Health Assessment

SJRA is the region’s premier imaging partner for physicians and medical professionals in fields such as neurology, psychiatry and gerontology, whose practices are dedicated to slowing the progression of dementia for their patients presenting with early signs and symptoms.

At SJRA, we offer the imaging expertise required as new therapies are emerging to treat or manage dementia. Our advanced PET/CT imaging capabilities allow for better detection than traditional cognitive health assessments and provide ongoing monitoring for patients undergoing treatment.

An Amyloid PET/CT may be recommended by your physician to capture a comprehensive visualization of plaque build-up in the brain, an early sign of cognitive conditions such as Alzheimer’s Disease.

South Jersey Radiology provides inviting outpatient facilities accompanied by friendly and supportive staff, making for a comfortable experience for our patients.

What to expect during your Amyloid PET/CT

When you come in for your Amyloid PET/CT scan, you will be asked to remove your glasses, earrings, and hearing aids (if applicable) as they can interfere with the imaging process. You will receive an intravenous (IV) injection of a radioactive tracer to highlight amyloid plaques in your brain.

You will then lie down on a padded table that slowly enters the PET/CT scanner, a large, doughnut-shaped machine that is open at both ends. This ensures that you remain comfortable and helps reduce any feelings of claustrophobia. One of our technologists will be present every step of the way to guide you through the process and ensure your comfort.

Amyloid PET/CT Frequently Asked Questions

What is an Amyloid PET/CT scan?

An Amyloid/PET CT is a type of imaging technique that combines Positron Emission Tomography (PET) and Computed Tomography (CT) to detect amyloid plaques in the brain. Amyloid plaques are associated with Alzheimer’s disease and other neurodegenerative conditions.

How should I prepare?

To prepare for your Amyloid Brain PET/CT, please follow these instructions below:

• Please arrive 15 minutes prior to your appointment.
• You do not need to make any changes to your diet and may continue any current medications prior to your appointment.
• No specific clothing is required. We recommend loose-fitting clothing to keep yourself comfortable.

Is the scan painful?

No, the Amyloid PET/CT scan is not painful. The only discomfort you might experience is a slight prick when the tracer is injected into your vein. During the scan itself, you will need to lie still on a table, but this is generally not uncomfortable.

When will I get the results?

Once your Amyloid PET/CT is complete, one of our board-certified, subspecialized radiologists will analyze the results and develop a detailed report for your physician. Your physician will receive the report within 48 hours and follow up with you to go over the results.

Are Amyloid PET/CT scans covered by insurance?

South Jersey Radiology is in-network with 99% of health insurance providers. If you are unsure about our network status with your health insurance provider, please contact your provider directly. In some cases, insurance companies may attempt to tell you which radiology centers are preferred.
