Brain MRI

Get a Brain MRI at South Jersey Radiology

A brain MRI is a safe, non-invasive study that produces detailed images of your brain. It helps you and your doctor see the brain’s structure and detect any signs of changes, injury, or disease. The scan uses no radiation, making it a great approach for capturing a baseline of cognitive health or ongoing treatment monitoring.

How does it work?

MRI technology uses strong magnets, measured in units called teslas (T), along with radio waves to create images of your brain. While a number of factors can dictate the accuracy and speed of an MRI, the tesla rating is a strong influencer with higher ratings leading toward more detailed images. These magnetic and radio waves are processed by a computer to create high-resolution images to allow doctors to study areas of concern with precision.

When is a brain MRI recommended?

A brain MRI is often used to investigate symptoms such as:

  • Memory loss or cognitive changes
  • Chronic headaches or migraines
  • Sudden vision or balance changes
  • Traumatic brain injuries
  • Seizures or unexplained neurological symptoms

Brain MRIs play an important role in diagnosing conditions like stroke, tumors, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease, and other conditions, giving both you and your doctor valuable insights for next steps.

During the scan

The scanner is a large, donut-like tube open at both ends, The scanner makes various sounds while it uses magnetic and radio waves to capture images. The scan typically takes between 30 – 60 minutes. It’s important to lie still so the images are clear.
