Cardiac CTA

Get a Cardiac CTA at South Jersey Radiology

A cardiac CTA, also known as coronary CT angiography, is a non-invasive imaging technique that captures detailed pictures of the arteries that supply blood to your heart. It is used to detect narrowing or blockages that may indicate coronary artery disease (CAD).

How does it work?

This approach uses an advanced CT scanner, typically a 64-slice or 128-slice system, along with a heart monitoring device called an electrocardiogram (ECG). The ECG helps timestamp when the images should be taken, so they are captured when the heart is at rest to avoid motion blur. THis combination provides high-resolution images of the coronary arteries without the need for a catheter.

When might it be recommended

Your doctor may suggest a cardiac CTA if you:

  • Have unexplained chest pain or shortness of breath
  • Show signs of high blood pressure or cholesterol
  • Have a family history of heart disease
  • Are over the age of 40 with lifestyle risk factors like smoking, inactivity, or obesity
  • Need a minimally invasive way to check for coronary artery disease

This scan helps you and your doctor spot abnormalities early to develop a proactive plan for your heart health

What to expect during your Cardiac CTA

Knowing what happens before and during your cardiac CTA can help you feel more prepared going into the appointment.

Before your scan

You may be asked to avoid caffeine and certain medications for a few hours beforehand. Our team will review your health history provided by you and your doctor, and explain what to expert prior to your appointment. A small IV may be placed in your arm to deliver contrast dye, which helps highlight the arteries during the scan

During your scan

You’ll lie on a padded table that slides into the CT scanner, featuring a fully open back rather than enclosed like an MRI. Small patches will be placed on your chest to monitor your heartbeat with an ECG. The scanner takes images in just a few seconds periodically, timed with your heart’s rhythm. You may be asked to hold your breath briefly while the images are taken to minimize any motion. The entire appointment between 30 – 60 minutes while the imaging itself is between 10 – 20 seconds.

Understanding Your Results

Once your cardiac CTA is complete, one of our board-certified radiologists will carefully review the images and prepare a detailed report for your doctor. Your doctor will analyze the report alongside other parts of your medical history such as blood tests, current and past medications, and more. Your doctor will explain to you what was found, answer any of your questions, and talk through next steps if needed.
