Breast Ultrasound

Get a Breast Ultrasound at South Jersey Radiology

Your physician may recommend a screening breast ultrasound to help detect cancers that may not show up on a screening mammogram. Unlike mammograms that use a small dose of radiation, a breast ultrasound uses sound waves to scan your entire breast, giving us more information to assess your tissue. It’s a helpful option for women with risk factors for breast cancer, dense breasts, or those unable to undergo a breast MRI.

A diagnostic breast ultrasound may be recommended by your physician to investigate areas of concern such as a lump that can be felt or abnormalities seen on a mammogram that needs more attention. Oftentimes, it’s done alongside a diagnostic mammogram for a more comprehensive evaluation.

What to expect during your Breast Ultrasound

During a screening or diagnostic breast ultrasound, you will be asked to lie comfortably on a table. One of our ultrasound technologists will apply a warm gel to your breast, which helps the transducer glide gently across your skin. The transducer sends out sound waves, which reflect off of the tissue in your breast, to create high-quality visuals. After the study, the gel is wiped off. It’s a quick and easy way for physicians to get a closer look at your breast tissue and check for any concerns.

Breast Ultrasound Frequently Asked Questions

What happens during a breast ultrasound?

Once you have checked-in for your appointment, we will take you to a private dressing room where you’ll change into a comfy gown that opens up in the front. Your study will be done by a caring, female technologist who’s certified in mammography. She may ask you some questions about your medical history or any concerns you have.

When you are ready, you will lie down on the table in the room. The technologist will gently move a small device called a transducer over the area of your breast that needs to be checked. This device sends out harmless sound waves that create pictures on a monitor for analysis.

How should I prepare for an ultrasound?

A breast ultrasound requires very minimal preparation. Please follow the guidelines below for a quick and easy appointment.

• Arrive 15 minutes early to your appointment.
• For your convenience and comfort, please wear two separate articles of clothing, a top and bottom, to the appointment.

If you have imaging history with another women’s imaging provider, it is important to let our team know before the appointment. Having prior images and reports is extremely important and enhances our radiologists ability to detect subtle changes and abnormalities.

Should I be worried about being referred for a breast ultrasound for dense breast tissue?

If your mammogram shows that you have dense breast tissue, which may hide some abnormalities, and if you have other factors that increase your risk of breast cancer, your physician might suggest additional screenings for you, including a breast ultrasound.

Having dense breast tissue is quite common, so there is no need to worry. The purpose of sharing this information is to make you aware and encourage you to talk to your physician about any other factors that might raise your risk of breast cancer, along with dense breast tissue. A screening breast ultrasound is often recommended for women with Class C or Class D breast density who don’t have any symptoms.

You’ll receive a report of your results, which will be sent to both you and your physician. If you have any questions or concerns about the report, don’t hesitate to reach out to your physician for clarification.
