What Can a CT Scan Tell You About Your Health?

A pelvic CT scan provides detailed images of the lower abdomen, reproductive organs, and surrounding tissues, helping to diagnose infections, kidney stones, and other conditions. Our team ensures fast, accurate results, so you get the right treatment.

Abscesses

What are Abscesses?

An abscess is a collection of pus that forms due to infection, commonly caused by bacteria, fungi, or parasites. Abscesses can develop in various organs and tissues, including the pelvis, abdomen, kidneys, liver, and soft tissues. They result from the body's immune response to infection, leading to inflammation and localized pain.

Endometriosis

What is Endometriosis?

Endometriosis is a chronic gynecological condition where tissue similar to the lining of the uterus (endometrium) grows outside the uterus. This abnormal tissue growth can occur on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, bladder, intestines, and other pelvic organs, leading to pain, inflammation, and potential fertility issues.

Hernias

What are Hernias?

A hernia occurs when an organ or tissue pushes through a weak spot in the surrounding muscle or connective tissue. Hernias most commonly develop in the abdomen, pelvis, or groin, leading to discomfort and pain. While some hernias cause minimal symptoms, others may require surgical repair to prevent complications like strangulation, where blood flow to the tissue is cut off.

Pelvic Fractures

What is Pelvic Fractures?

A pelvic fracture is a break in one or more bones of the pelvis, which includes the hip bones, sacrum, and coccyx. These fractures range from minor, stable injuries that heal with rest to severe, unstable fractures that require surgery. Pelvic fractures often occur due to high-impact trauma, falls, or osteoporosis-related bone weakening.

Prostate Enlargement

What is Prostate Enlargement?

Prostate enlargement, also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), is a non-cancerous growth of the prostate gland that commonly occurs as men age. As the prostate enlarges, it can press against the urethra and bladder, leading to urinary difficulties and discomfort.

Urolithiasis

What is Urolithiasis?

Urolithiasis refers to the formation of stones (calculi) in the urinary tract, which includes the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra. These stones, commonly known as kidney stones, develop when minerals and salts crystallize in the urine, leading to pain, blockages, and potential urinary complications.

Pelvic CT Patient Reviews

Pelvic CT Frequently Asked Questions

What is a pelvic CT scan, and how does it work?

A pelvic CT scan is a non-invasive imaging technique that uses X-rays and computer technology to create detailed, cross-sectional images of the pelvic organs, bones, and soft tissues. It provides clearer and more precise imaging than standard X-rays, helping doctors diagnose conditions affecting the reproductive system, urinary tract, gastrointestinal organs, and pelvic bones.

Why would I need a pelvic CT scan?

A pelvic CT scan may be recommended if you experience:
1.) Chronic pelvic pain or unexplained discomfort
2.) Frequent urinary issues or blood in the urine
3.) Irregular menstrual cycles, heavy bleeding, or gynecological concerns
4.) Suspected ovarian cysts, fibroids, or endometriosis
5.) Reproductive health issues, including infertility
6.) Signs of infection, abscesses, or inflammation in the pelvic region
7.) A history of pelvic trauma or recent injury
8.) Possible tumors or abnormal growths in the pelvic organs

How long does a pelvic CT scan take?

The scan itself takes about 10 to 15 minutes, but you may spend 30 to 45 minutes total at the imaging center, including check-in and preparation.

Will I need to drink contrast dye?

Depending on the reason for your scan, you may need to drink a contrast solution or receive an IV injection to enhance image clarity. Your referring doctor will let you know in advance by outlining it on the referral.

Is a CT scan painful?

No, a CT scan is a painless, non-invasive study. You’ll lie comfortably on a table while the scanner takes images.

Do I need a referral for a CT scan?

Some insurance plans require a doctor’s referral, while others do not. It is important to check with your doctor and your insurance benefits manager to determine if one is needed before scheduling.

Is a CT scan safe?

Yes, CT scans use a low dose of radiation, and they are considered very safe for diagnostic imaging. If you’re pregnant or have concerns about radiation exposure, consult with your doctor before scheduling.

How do I prepare for CT scan of the pelvis?

You may be asked to avoid eating or drinking for a certain period of time before your scan, especially if contrast is recommended. Wear comfortable clothing and remove any metal objects like jewelry. Our team will review your medical history when you arrive for your appointment to ensure the proper preparation was followed before the study begins.

How soon will I get my results?

One of our board-certified, subspecialized radiologists will review your images, and develop a detailed report. The results are typically sent to your referring doctor within 1 – 2 days, and available in our patient portal within 5 – 7 days.

Will my insurance cover the cost of the scan?

South Jersey Radiology Associates is in-network with 99% of health insurance providers, including Aetna®, AmeriHealth®, Blue Cross Blue Shield®, Cigna®, Humana®, UnitedHealthcare® and many state-sponsored medical plans. Our staff will verify your coverage and discuss any out-of-pocket costs before your appointment.

What if I have claustrophobia?

CT scans are open, not enclosed like an MRI, so most patients feel comfortable. If you have concerns, let us know, and we’ll help ensure a stress-free experience.
