What Can a CT Scan Tell You About Your Health?

Anosmia

What is Anosmia?

Anosmia is the partial or complete loss of the sense of smell. It can be temporary or permanent, depending on the underlying cause. Because the sense of smell is closely linked to taste, anosmia often leads to a reduced ability to taste food, affecting appetite and overall quality of life.

Chronic Sinusitis

What is Chronic Sinusitis?

Chronic sinusitis is long-term inflammation of the sinuses that lasts for 12 weeks or longer, despite treatment attempts. Unlike acute sinusitis, which is often caused by a temporary infection, chronic sinusitis may result from ongoing inflammation, nasal polyps, allergies, or structural issues that block sinus drainage.

Deviated Septums

What are Deviated Septums?

A deviated septum occurs when the nasal septum, the thin wall dividing the two nasal passages, is off-center or crooked. This can partially or completely block one side of the nose, making it difficult to breathe properly. While some people are born with a deviated septum, others develop it due to acute trauma.

Fungal Infections

What are Fungal Infections?

A fungal sinus infection occurs when fungi invade the sinuses, leading to inflammation, congestion, and potential tissue damage. These infections are most common in individuals with weakened immune systems, chronic sinusitis, or prolonged exposure to mold or damp environments.

Nasal Polyps

What are Nasal Polyps?

Nasal polyps are soft, painless, noncancerous growths that develop in the lining of the nasal passages or sinuses. They result from chronic inflammation and can vary in size, sometimes growing large enough to block normal airflow and sinus drainage.

Rhinitis

What is Rhinitis?

Rhinitis is inflammation of the nasal lining, leading to persistent congestion, sneezing, runny nose, and postnasal drip. It can be allergic (triggered by allergens like pollen, dust, or pet dander) or non-allergic (caused by infections, irritants, or underlying medical conditions).

Sinus CT Patient Reviews

Sinus CT Frequently Asked Questions

What is a sinus CT scan, and how does it work?

A sinus CT scan is a non-invasive imaging technique that uses X-rays and computer technology to create detailed, 3D images of your sinuses and nasal passages. It provides a clearer view than standard X-rays and helps doctors diagnose chronic sinus issues, nasal blockages, infections, and structural abnormalities affecting breathing.

Why would I need a sinus CT scan?

A sinus CT scan is typically recommended if you have:
1.) Chronic sinus infections (lasting 12 weeks or longer)
2.) Nasal congestion that doesn’t improve with treatment
3.) Facial pressure or headaches linked to sinus issues
4.) Nasal polyps or suspected growths in the sinuses
5.) A deviated septum or structural abnormalities affecting breathing
6.) Suspected fungal or bacterial sinus infections

How long does a sinus CT scan take?

The scan itself takes about 10 to 15 minutes, but you may spend 30 to 45 minutes total at the imaging center, including check-in and preparation.

Will I need to drink contrast dye?

Most sinus CT scans do not require contrast dye. However, if your doctor is evaluating tumors, vascular conditions, or severe infections, contrast may be used. If contrast is necessary, it will be administered through an IV, and you may need to fast for a few hours beforehand.

Is a CT scan painful?

No, a CT scan is a painless, non-invasive study. You’ll lie comfortably on a table while the scanner takes images.

Do I need a referral for a CT scan?

Some insurance plans require a doctor’s referral, while others do not. It is important to check with your doctor and your insurance benefits manager to determine if one is needed before scheduling.

Is a CT scan safe?

Yes, sinus CT scans are safe and commonly used to diagnose sinus conditions. They use low-dose radiation, and our imaging specialists take every precaution to minimize exposure. If you are pregnant or have concerns about radiation, let your doctor know before scheduling.

How do I prepare for an sinus CT scan?

You may be asked to avoid eating or drinking for a certain period of time before your scan, especially if contrast is recommended. Wear comfortable clothing and remove any metal objects like jewelry. Our team will review your medical history when you arrive for your appointment to ensure the proper preparation was followed before the study begins.

How soon will I get my results?

One of our board-certified, subspecialized radiologists will review your images, and develop a detailed report. The results are typically sent to your referring doctor within 1 – 2 days, and available in our patient portal within 5 – 7 days.

Will my insurance cover the cost of the scan?

South Jersey Radiology Associates is in-network with 99% of health insurance providers, including Aetna®, AmeriHealth®, Blue Cross Blue Shield®, Cigna®, Humana®, UnitedHealthcare® and many state-sponsored medical plans. Our staff will verify your coverage and discuss any out-of-pocket costs before your appointment.

What if I have claustrophobia?

CT scans are open, not enclosed like an MRI, so most patients feel comfortable. If you have concerns, let us know, and we’ll help ensure a stress-free experience.
