What Can a CT Scan Tell You About Your Health?

A CT scan provides clear, detailed images of your abdominal organs. It helps detect and monitor a variety of conditions so you can get the right treatment quickly.

Appendicitis

What is Appendicitis?

Appendicitis is an inflammation of the appendix, a small, finger-shaped organ attached to the large intestine. If left untreated, the appendix can rupture, leading to a serious infection in the abdomen called peritonitis.

Bowel Obstructions

What are Bowel Obstructions?

A bowel obstruction occurs when the small or large intestine becomes partially or completely blocked, preventing food, fluids, and gas from passing through. This can lead to severe pain, bloating, and life threating complications if not treated correctly.

Gallbladder Disease

What is Gallbladder Disease?

Gallbladder disease refers to a range of conditions affecting the gallbladder, a small organ beneath the liver that stores and releases bile to aid in digestion. When the gallbladder becomes inflamed or blocked by gallstones, it can cause severe pain and digestive problems.

Kidney Disease

What is Kidney Disease?

Kidney disease refers to conditions that impair the kidneys' ability to filter waste and excess fluids from the blood. When kidney function declines, it can lead to toxic buildup, high blood pressure, and other serious health complications.

Liver Disease

What is Liver Disease?

Liver disease refers to a range of conditions that affect the liver’s ability to process toxins, produce bile, and regulate metabolism. If left untreated, liver disease can lead to scarring (cirrhosis), liver failure, or even cancer.

Pancreatitis

What is Pancreatitis?

Pancreatitis is the inflammation of the pancreas, a vital organ responsible for digesting food and regulating blood sugar levels. When the pancreas becomes inflamed, it can cause severe pain, digestive issues, and serious complications if left untreated.

Abdominal CT Patient Reviews

Abdominal CT Frequently Asked Questions

How long does an abdominal CT scan take?

The scan itself typically takes 10 – 15 minutes, though you may spend a little more time at our centers if preparation is needed.

Will I need to drink contrast dye?

Depending on the reason for your scan, you may need to drink a contrast solution or receive an IV injection to enhance image clarity. Your referring doctor will let you know in advance by outlining it on the referral.

Is a CT scan painful?

No, a CT scan is a painless, non-invasive study. You’ll lie comfortably on a table while the scanner takes images.

Do I need a referral for a CT scan?

Some insurance plans require a doctor’s referral, while others do not. It is important to check with your doctor and your insurance benefits manager to determine if one is needed before scheduling.

Is a CT scan safe?

Yes, CT scans use a low dose of radiation, and they are considered very safe for diagnostic imaging. If you’re pregnant or have concerns about radiation exposure, consult with your doctor before scheduling.

How do I prepare for an abdominal CT scan?

You may be asked to avoid eating or drinking for a certain period of time before your scan, especially if contrast is recommended. Wear comfortable clothing and remove any metal objects like jewelry. Our team will review your medical history when you arrive for your appointment to ensure the proper preparation was followed before the study begins.

How soon will I get my results?

One of our board-certified, subspecialized radiologists will review your images, and develop a detailed report. The results are typically sent to your referring doctor within 1 – 2 days, and available in our patient portal within 5 – 7 days.

Will my insurance cover the cost of the scan?

South Jersey Radiology Associates is in-network with 99% of health insurance providers, including Aetna®, AmeriHealth®, Blue Cross Blue Shield®, Cigna®, Humana®, UnitedHealthcare® and many state-sponsored medical plans. Our staff will verify your coverage and discuss any out-of-pocket costs before your appointment.

What if I have claustrophobia?

CT scans are open, not enclosed like an MRI, so most patients feel comfortable. If you have concerns, let us know, and we’ll help ensure a stress-free experience.
