Frequently Asked Questions

Learn about the benefits of CT scans and how to prepare for your appointment with our frequently asked questions.

Before visiting one of our CT scan imaging centers, you will need to schedule an appointment. Our patient representatives will ask for the following information:

  • Physician referral or prescription
  • The reason for the MRI scan
  • The body part being scanned
  • Insurance Card
  • Government Issued I.D.

Self-referrals are allowed. You can request a CT scan without a referral or prescription. Our patient representative will ask safety questions and the reason for your request before scheduling your CT appointment.

The length of a CT scan depends on what part of the body is being studied and if contrast material is being utilized. On average, a CT scan takes about 20 – 30 minutes to complete. The results of the CT scan will be interpreted by a subspecialized radiologist and sent to your physician within 48 hours.

A CT scan requires little to no special preparation. South Jersey Radiology Associates recommends that you wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing. You should avoid wearing any accessories that contain metal including zippers, buttons, jewelry, underwire, and so forth. Based on the part of the body being scanned, your physician and our staff may instruct you to fast prior to your appointment.

A CT scan can detect medical abnormalities across different areas of the body. In comparison to an MRI, CT scans produce more precise images of bones, joints, and certain organs. Commonly, referring physicians request a CT scan to help them diagnose conditions such as:

  • Bone fractures and chips
  • Gastrointestinal conditions
  • Neurological conditions
  • Various forms of cancer
  • Vascular conditions

South Jersey Radiology Associates is in-network with 99% of health insurance providers. If your CT scan is not covered by your insurance, our team will work with you and your family to determine the best action to take. Please contact your insurance carrier to inquire about SJRA's in-network status if you don't see your plan listed.

CT scans emit a small dosage of radiation to improve the quality of the images captured by the study. The amount of radiation you are exposed to during a CT scan is less than what you are exposed to during everyday life through cell phones, television, and gas-heated homes. At South Jersey Radiology, all of our CT scan studies follow low-dose radiation protocols set by Image Gently.

At South Jersey Radiology, our patient aides and technologists will be by your side every step of the way to ensure you are comfortable throughout the CT scan. The equipment used during CT scans is a lot more open and offers more room than MRI machines. If you are nervous or anxious about your CT scan, please contact your referring physician to see what other imaging options are available.
