Frequently Asked Questions

Learn about what to expect and the benefits of annual screening mammograms.

In the United States, breast cancer affects 1 in 8 women. We recommend that women over the age of 40 schedule screening mammograms annually to check for signs of breast cancer. If you have a family history or predisposition to breast cancer, we recommend starting annual mammograms at 35. The early stages of breast cancer are a lot more treatable, which makes early detection and routine screening very important.

On average, a two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) screening mammogram takes no longer than 15 minutes to complete. After your appointment, one of our board-certified, subspecialized radiologists will create a report. The report will be available to your physician and you within 24 – 48 hours.

A screening mammogram comprises a series of X-rays that capture images of your breast tissue. During a screening mammogram, your breast tissue is spread out evenly by placing your breasts between two surfaces that allow an X-ray to capture images of the breast tissue. During a three-dimensional (3D) mammogram, three different angles are captured to achieve greater accuracy. During a two-dimensional (2D) mammogram, two different angles are captured.

There is no special preparation for a mammogram. We recommend wearing comfortable, loose-fitting clothing. Do not wear any deodorant, fragrances, or moisturizer. Any type of topical substance can affect the quality of the images. Lastly, schedule your appointment when your breasts are the least sensitive.

When scheduling your mammogram, it is important to go to a full-service, women's imaging center to remove the likelihood of false positives. Sometimes, mammograms require follow-up imaging. South Jersey Radiology offers diagnostic and advanced women's imaging services to provide high-quality results in a timely manner.

Annual screening mammograms are covered by health insurance plans 100%. Health insurance providers consider annual screening mammograms a medically necessary preventative service. With this distinction, most health insurance providers cover annual screening mammograms for women over 40. For women with a family history of breast cancer, many health insurance providers will cover annual screening mammograms starting at the age of 30.
