CT radiation dose has been a topic in the news of late.
South Jersey Radiology has been a leader in CT dose
reduction programs for many years.All
of our scanners use advanced dose reduction software. Our radiologists have developed
protocols to maximize the information from your scan with the lowest dose
possible. All of our equipment is state-of-the-art and American College of
Radiology (ACR) certified—indeed, our radiation doses are much less than the
standards acceptable by the ACR.
The key to understanding the risk of radiation is to weigh
it against the benefit—if the patient needs the scan to evaluate a disease, the
risk of radiation is much less than the risk of letting the disease progress or
remain undiagnosed.
The lowest possible dose is zero, meaning you do not have
the scan performed. Some of the examinations for which CT is used can be
evaluated with alternate imaging tests, notably Ultrasound and MRI, which use
no radiation.
Your doctor can discuss the use of these alternate exams with you and guide you
to the best test for your problem.
